What is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation and in a nutshell, it is a method to get your website to rank higher on the search engines like Google and Bing and others.

When you search for let’s say a product service or company using Google or any other search engine your request is searched against all websites and content that search engine holds. Every website on the internet needs to be indexed by a search engine to appear in any search requests.

So, let’s say you enter the search request in Google for “black leather shoes for men”, Google will use its database to pull up all the results which match this request, but and yes, a big but, it will only pull up websites that are correctly structured and are what it calls quality content sites. This means to get to the top of Google you need to have what we call SEO performed on your website, without this your site won’t rank very well. This in turn means low business from relevant customers.

The page you are brought to after you enter a search enquiry is called the search engine results page (SERP). The SERP gives you two main types of information, and these are “organic results” and “pay-per-click” (PPC). The organic results are those that are influenced by the websites SEO, while the PPC results are paid for by website owners           .

It’s the organic search results which are created using good SEO and this can take sometime. It makes sense to use a SEO strategy, as some of the keywords used to get the required results can cost thousands. A good SEO optimisation service by using an agency or plugins is the best place to start.

Why do search engines care about SEO?

The simple answer to this is that they want people to keep coming back to search for products and services using their search engine. The only this will happen is if you can find what you want quickly and easily without rambling through content you are not interested in. Search engines use complicated algorithms to rank websites based on a number of variables. Some of these variables include

Content – website content is one of the most important things to get your website ranking within organic searches and is one of the best things for SEO, however we need to point out it needs to be quality content with the right balance of keywords you are targeting.

Images – All your images need to be correctly optimised (correct tags and size)

Mobile friendly – Google and other search engines also test websites against being optimised for mobile devices and yes this means that the navigation and content has to be visible on mobile devices to get better ranking. There is talk that Google is now not ranking sites which do not pass their tests.

External Links – Search engines will consider how many links your site gets from external sites and whether these sites are relevant to your business, and vice versa which sites you link to. Your internal links are equally as important as your site SEO is also ranked by search engines based on how easy it is for a customer to find what they are looking for.

SEO and Keywords, what are these?

Every search engine will match keywords against your content and there are various methods used to generate good keywords and use them correctly. In the old days many websites would use what is called “keyword stuffing”. This was a method of just repeating the required keywords as many times as possible at the bottom of the website or using the same colour for the background text to hide it from users but show it to search engines. This no longer works and more than likely will get your site removed from web engines like Google and Bing.

What search engines look at now is structured text and proper and real information which is relevant to the search query submitted by the user. So it is best to find a SEO optimisation service.
